Iphone vs black bery or nokia Nseries?

Iphone vs black bery or nokia Nseries?

i think iphone had the right idea but didnt follow through. The touch screen interface is really the way of the future because you can customize the interface to the application. On phone with buttons those buttons are always there never moving never changing. Also it's web browsing is really good although it doesnt support flash. However the iphone's closed file system make black berry a more versatile phone because you can do what you want with it. The future of sell phones is making them more like laptops.

What are the full iPhone unlocking policies of the UK networks?

What are the full iPhone unlocking policies of the UK networks?

I’ve already looked at how to buy the cheapest officially unlocked iPhone in the UK, but what if you already have your iPhone?
If you’ve decided you either can’t or don’t want to use an unofficial unlock, such as ultrasn0w from the iPhone Dev Team, then that leaves you with one option: get it unlocked officially by a mobile network.
So what’s the likelihood of that happening with the UK iPhone carriers?
First port of call is Apple’s support page, “Locating iPhone wireless carriers“. That’s where I’ve cribbed this graphic from:

image of UK carrier unlock availability
According to Apple, all UK networks lock their iPhones, with only O2 and Orange allowing unlocking. But that’s not the whole story, as a little digging around their support documents and forums* has shown.
What won’t they unlock?
To be clear, no UK network will or even can unlock an iPhone bought off eBay, or acquired from another network. If your mate got one free on an upgrade and he’s on a different network to the one you want to use it with – you’re out of luck.
Networks can only unlock iPhones which have been bought SIM-locked to their own network.

The Unlock Policies in Full

O2
O2 offer the best unlocking policy of any carrier in the UK, in my opinion, although the less said about their coverage the better. They clearly state what’s allowed on their unlock page:
  • Pay Monthly customers can unlock at any time, with no charge
  • PAYG customers must pay £15. If it’s less than 12 months after you bought your iPhone from O2, you’ll lose your Web n Wifi bolt-on.
You can request an unlock via O2′s unlock page, and it’ll take up to 14 days to get your unlock approved.
Orange
Orange don’t mention unlocking anywhere on their support website. Even a Google search of the Orange site only provides information on how to unlock the iPhone’s screen. Not helpful.
But this Macrumors thread, which I’ve confirmed with Orange by phone, outlines their policy:
  • Pay Monthly and PAYG customers can unlock after the first 3 months of registering their phone with the network
  • It’ll cost you £20
You can request an unlock via Orange Customer Services, and it’ll take up to 10 days to get your unlock approved.
Tesco
Despite Apple’s information, Tesco do offer unlocking.
According to their iPhone Help FAQ page:
Can I ‘unlock’ the iPhone and use it with another network?
If you wish to use Apple iPhone on another network we will only provide an unlatching code after 12 months or after the completion of any Pay monthly contract period.
There’s no mention of any cost or time to provide the unlock approval.
Vodafone
As per Apple’s support page, Vodafone don’t offer unlocking in the UK – although they do in other countries, such as Australia. But perhaps that should read they don’t offer unlocking at the moment.
According to two posts on Vodafone’s eForum, an unlocking option may become available once the first iPhone contracts approach expiration. Vodafone eForum admin Trev_Vodafone posted the following:
I can confirm that our stance on unlocking iphones is as follows:
The iPhone can only be unlocked if the customer has purchased a ‘box only’ device without a Vodafone contract. This means that if you purchased an iphone, from Vodafone, with a contract we would not be able to unlock this device.
VF do not offer unlocking at the moment, they say that as the first contracts issued come to an end it ‘may’ be offered, but until then you are tied to VF.
There are no details on the cost, but for Vodafone in Australia, there is a few options:
  • iPhone less than 6 months old, unlocked online: AU$75 (£44)
  • iPhone less than 6 months old, unlocked by customer services: AU$100 (£59)
  • iPhone more than 6 months old, unlocked online: AU$25 (£15)
  • iPhone more than 6 months old, unlocked by customer services: AU$50 (£30)
Ouch! Let’s hope Vodafone don’t charge such prices in the UK, if they do allow unlocking.
The Real Picture
With all the little details taken into account, the actual unlocking situation is more like this:

Carrier Locked to Carrier Carrier offers authorised unlocking Unlockable during contract? How much does it cost? (Pay monthly) How much does it cost? (PAYG)
O2 Yes Yes Yes £0 £15
Orange Yes Yes Yes £20 £20
Tesco Yes Yes No ? ?
Vodafone Yes Maybe Doesn’t look like it ? ?
Anything else?
For an official unlock, you’ll receive a text confirming the unlock has been approved. Then, connect through iTunes and Apple’s server will authorise the unlock. If it doesn’t happen straight away, then just wait a bit – your carrier simply hasn’t got notification that your iPhone can be unlocked to Apple yet, or conversely, Apple has actioned the unlock request from your carrier. Patience grasshopper.
Also bear in mind: an unlock will occur every time you restore your phone, as iPhones are restored to a locked state.
If you’re thinking of using your iPhone abroad, and want to get your it unlocked to do so – don’t wait until you’re at your destination. The first time you unlock, it can only be done through iTunes and on your home network. So once you’re abroad, that’s it!
(Although there’s always the unofficial route!)

*Yes, I know the correct plural is fora, but give it up on that one.

iPhone 4 HDR Photography and Why It’s Important

iPhone 4 HDR Photography and Why It’s Important

iOS 4.1 just went live. Among its many updates and improvements is a feature that is specific to the iPhone 4. iOS 4.1 when running on the iPhone 4 adds an HDR photography option to the camera app.
The HDR (High Dynamic Range) technique has been around since the 1930s, but this is the first time that it has been offered as a default option on a smartphone. What does it mean and should you use it instead of the standard photo option? Let’s find out. (Non HDR shots on the left, HDR shots on the right).

When you take a photo with the iPhone the exposure is automatically set to render the best possible range of luminance based on the centre of the scene or, if you tap on a part of the scene, that area. As I’m certain you have noticed for yourself, this means quite a bit of experimentation to find the best compromise between under and over exposure. Under expose the photo and you risk crushing all the blacks and dark colours, over expose the photo and you’ll surely end up with washed out colours and very little detail in the highlight areas.

Of course, the iPhone 4 camera unit is no DSLR, the tiny optics and sensor means that most photos will be a compromise. If the scene has quite a flat dynamic range of luminance, such as in a well lit room, you may get a very good representation of reality. However, if the scene has a broad dynamic range, as is usually found on a bright sunny morning or late afternoon, then you will likely lose a lot of the detail in the shadows and highlights.

Apple’s HDR option for the iPhone 4 running iOS 4.1 gets around this by very quickly taking 3 photos at 3 different exposures and combining the results almost in realtime. There is a delay or about 3 seconds whilst the A4 processor does its thing. The results are quite striking. As you can see from the images here (for the full set head over to Flickr), areas that are devoid of all detail without HDR now retain detail in both the shadows and the highlights. That is the true power of HDR.

In short, Apple have given the iPhone 4 camera a significant boast with hardly any drawbacks. There are times when you will need to turn off HDR and they include fast moving objects, scenes that are interesting or beautiful because of their high contrast and fast paced photography when the 3 to 4 second wait is simply too long.
Apple have thrown down the gauntlet with their HDR implementation. It’s now up to the likes of Nokia, Samsung and HTC to respond. I’m convinced that realtime HDR is the way forward for smartphones.

Undeleting iPhone photos, or anything else

I’m starting to post more stuff that I come across that I think will be interesting to All About iPhone’s readers, such as this. If you happen to delete photos – or any other data – on your iPhone that you want to recover, then you can try this method:
http://modmyi.com/forums/file-mods/237321-how-iphone-data-recovery.html
It works because data on the iPhone’s disk (as with any other computer) is still present until it gets overwritten. When you “delete” a photo, only the reference to that photo file is actually removed. You can then use a photo recovery tool, as with any other disk. Personally, I’ve always found PhotoRescue to be superb at recovering photos.
This method does require an iPhone that has been jailbroken prior to you deleting the data you want to recover. But because you get a disk image of your entire phone, you could recover any data from it, as long as it hasn’t already been overwritten, and you know where to look.

iPlayer can’t be streamed via AirPlay – or can it?

In September I was all excited about streaming BBC iPlayer content from an iPhone or iPad to the new Apple TV, based on the fact that AirPlay allows:
Any H.264 content from the web can be broadcast over Airplay to your HDTV.
Except that now iOS 4.2 has been released, it doesn’t work that way. Only audio can be streamed from non-Apple apps, which is frankly rubbish.
But there may be a solution.
Erica Sadun of TUAW managed to get a custom video app to send video to an Apple TV, and later Steven Troughton-Smith came up with a one-line solution.
All of which means, although for jailbreakers only, there is very likely to be a solution. Very soon, I would expect to see an app available on Cydia that will allow any video to be sent to an Apple TV.
The only remaining problem, which I didn’t think about in my earlier article, is the resolution. The BBC’s H.264 iPhone and iPad streams were not intended to be scaled up to 32′ TV screens. I’ve played BBC iPlayer content through my TV using a component cable; it looked OK, but not great. A far better solution would be for Apple to allow iPlayer streaming direct on the Apple TV – which would require the Beeb to have another, higher-bitrate H.264 stream that will scale to TV sizes. Or perhaps an iPlayer app, if Apple allows Apple TV apps, and the BBC delivers one

App giveaway: CoPilot Live satnav

At the start of the year I reviewed CoPilot Live for UK and Ireland from ALK Technologies.
It’s my first choice of satnav app, and I’m happy to promote it as I think it’s worth your cash. It has also just been updated with the latest NAVTEQ maps and safety camera data.
And lucky you, Santa has brought TEN copies of the app for me to give away!
CoPilot Live works on iPhone, and on iPod touch with an external GPS. You can also get CoPilot Live HD for iPad for Europe and North America. It’s one of the top grossing apps on the UK App Store, and normally costs £19.99 (or €19.99 on the Irish App Store).
Check out the main features:
  • choice of mapping options: 2D, 3D and Driver Safety mode (this provides just a direction arrow and next turn instruction for the minimum amount of driver distraction, which is the option I use most)
  • voice guided, turn by turn instructions (Optional Text To Speech upgrade)
  • real sign information, Lane Assistance and ClearTurn instructions for complex junctions
  • access to Live Local Search – search for a business or service by generic term or brand in your immediate vicinity (which requires a mobile internet connection)
  • optional upgrade to Live Traffic services
  • safety camera notification (except in the US and Switzerland)
All you have to do to enter is leave a comment below, or retweet this tweet.
The competition closes on Xmas Eve at midnight. Good luck!

You can now unlock your iPhone 4 from O2 and Orange !

You can now unlock your iPhone 4 from O2 and Orange !

With a quick chat and an email, reader Xavier managed to get his iPhone 4 unlocked from O2. There’s nothing special about his contract, and he isn’t an O2 employee or anything like that. And it seems that you can get your iPhone 4 unlocked from Orange as well, although reports are it can be a bit torturous. Here’s how it happened.
Unlocking iPhone 4 from O2
Xavier has previously tried to get his iPhone 4 unlocked from O2 in November, submitting the O2 unlock form. The response he received was:
Hi Xavier,
Thank you for unlatching request.
At present O2 is not supporting unlatching for iPhone 4 handset.
However, the O2 forums have been reporting that some people have tried on multiple occasions, and a few iPhone 4 unlocks have slipped through. But Xavier thought he’d try a different route. In Xavier’s words:
Today I went went to the o2 web page and a pop up web chat customer service window appeared… I started a chat with the customer service and told her (Amy) that wanted my iPhone unlocked – She asked me for IMEI and two letters from my security answer and after a few mins she said it was done… That was around 5pm, around 7.30 got an SMS saying “This is O2 customer service. Thanks for your email. We’re pleased to tell you that we’ve just sent you a reply”
The email he received said that his iPhone 4 had been unlocked. He hasn’t been able to confirm this in iTunes yet as he doesn’t have micro-SIM from another network. But I did a little digging on O2 Forums, and found that lots of people have been having success getting their iPhone 4s unlocked.
It seem that O2 changed their policy in relation to iPhone 4, and have been unlocking them since December 6th. They haven’t been quick to publicise this. As far as I can make out, it’s only for Pay Monthly customers. Right now O2′s unlock form doesn’t seem to work, and the key seems to be to go through their live chat on o2.co.uk.
It’s also interesting that O2 can unlock an iPhone within 24 hours; some people have reported getting it done within the hour! This is a change from before, as O2 claimed it always take 14 days. So if want a quick unlock of your iPhone 4, go through live chat, not the unlock form.
Unlocking iPhone 4 from Orange
It seems Orange have a 3 month waiting period in their Ts & Cs for Pay Monthly customers, after which you can contact customer services and give them the IMEI of your iPhone (to get this, go into the phone keypad, enter *#06# and press call). They will then authorise the unlock, although it’ll cost you £20.
However, check out the responses near the bottom of this post on Ken’s Tech Tips. Some people are having real problems getting the unlock approved, going round in circles with Orange support staff.
And there’s a further problem: if you bought your iPhone with an Orange SIM from Apple, Orange will refuse to unlock it. But so will Apple, as you’re an Orange customer. What’s the solution to that? The Sales of Goods Act states that your relationship is with the company you bought it from – which would indicate it’s Apple. But, if your contract is signed with Orange, and Apple insist your carrier needs to process the unlock, you’re stuck. Complain, and you may get your unlock.
Let me know how you get on.

To see how Xavier’s chat with O2 went, here the transcript:

Finally! Touchnote goes awesome!!

John Gruber recently highlighted Google searches for “finally” and “iOS5″. It seems a lot of people think iOS has now hit a point where it has matured into a really solid platform.
I’ve been using the new version of Touchnote’s iPhone app – out later today – and I feel exactly the same. All the niggles that I complained about before have been worked out.
If you’re not aware of Touchnote, it allows you to send postcards – real, physical ones, not eCards – using photos from your iPhone. I loved the idea when the Touchnote app came out in 2009, and used it to send a few cards on holiday
.
There now are other apps that offer the same sort of service, such as goPostal and Postagram, but these only work in the US, and in the case of Postagram, only work with Instagram photos.
Unfortunatey, using Touchnote’s app was always a bit of a hassle. Creating the postcards was fine, but paying for them was a complete faff. You were directed to a mobile Paypal gateway with a tiny font, so it required zooming and panning. I remember I tried to send a card while I was in France, and the just as I’d pained my way through Paypal to pay for a card, the wifi crapped out, and I had to start all over again. And if you wanted to send another card – same process. I gave up sending Touchnote postcards after that.
But the new version of the app? Superb.
There’s a very simple interface to add a photo, caption, text, address (more than one if required), and an optional Google map showing where the photo was taken. The interface has been simplified and expanded – so you can now crop, zoom and rotate your photos.
Touchnote iPhone app interface
The Touchnote iPhone app interface
However it’s the payment that’s way easier. You can now log in with your Touchnote account, just as on touchnote.com. So if you’re in credit, there’s zero friction to sending cards. It just depletes one credit per card. You can also buy credits from within the app using Paypal or credit/debit card, both with native interfaces. This alone means I’ll be sending quite a few cards. At £1.49 a pop, it’s not much more than the cost of getting a photo printed out and posted, and certainly a lot less hassle.
I would love to see Touchnote continue to improve:
* You can send cards to multiple people, but sometimes it’s not just a case of adding another address – I’d like to be able to edit the text. So I want to be able to re-open a postcard that I’ve already sent.
* You also can’t save a card in draft to edit later, unless you hit Send then Cancel.
* The ability to move the caption around and resize it would be good
* There’s no in-app purchasing, which would make payment even easier, but Apple doesn’t allow physical goods to be purchased in-app.
* Maybe integration with Facebook or other sources to print and send photos from there? EDIT: I’ve just found out that Facebook integration is coming soon. Result.
It has been a long wait for a decent upgrade since the app was released, but the new version is great. The only real problem I have with Touchnote now is that I may never have to say “Deux timbres pour l’Angleterre” again!

Apple News | Apple Overtakes Nokia as World’s Leading Smartphone Vendor

Apple has overtaken Nokia as the world’s leading smartphone vendor by volume, reports the Financial Times. Apple had already beaten Nokia by revenue and profit
The troubled Finnish mobile phone maker made a net loss of €368m ($524m) during the three-month period as revenues declined 7 per cent to €9.3bn.
Shipments of Nokia smartphones declined by 34 per cent to 16.7m units, compared with the 20.3m iPhones shipped by Apple in its second quarter.
Nokia is hoping to turn things around by partnering with Microsoft for their smartphone software. The company is expected to release their first WP7 device later this year.

iPhone Games: Zombie Farm Review

Those familiar with the wide variety of Facebook farm-based games will be sure to really like the unique twist on that agrarian trend. Zombie Farm is a game that allows you to create a farm that harvests both fresh vegetables and not-so-fresh zombies. Moving beyond the straight plant and build your farm theme, however, this game also requires you to build a zombie army to fight the neighboring farmer, Old McDonell. It’s an odd mix of Farmville meets Plants vs Zombies.

An important note for this app is that the cost of the game is FREE – which is a very cool and great treat. Be aware, though, that there are options for in-app purchases to help you in your efforts to build and better your zombie farm and army. However, you don’t have to make a purchase in order to have fun with the game. Keep in mind, though, that while you don’t have to purchase brain (a necessary possession throughout the game) for the first ten levels, relying instead on successful campaigns against Old McDonell to earn the gray matter, in order to go beyond the tenth level you will have to purchase one brain. That purchase price is only .99c. If you like the game enough to make it to the tenth level and want to go beyond, it would benefit you to pay the brain fee to continue playing the game.
The basic gameplay is simple enough. You must start out by planting seeds and zombies to harvest. Seeds grow into various crops (carrots, tomatoes, onions, etc.), which you sell to get money to buy additional seeds and zombies, etc. Every seed planted has its own growing rate and value, so players should, especially in early play, plant wisely. Faster growing produce means you can sell your crops more frequently and earn more money, thereby growing your farm more quickly.

The zombies you plant grow into, well, zombies. Once harvested, the zombies wander around the farm mindlessly (sorry — couldn’t resist it). When you have gathered at least eight zombies, you have enough to form an army to attack Old McDonell. Zombies come in a variety of forms and mutations, though in the earliest stages of the game you’ll be limited to your plain old garden-variety zombie.
Zombie Farm is very simply a fun little game. The graphics are amusing and silly, and the irony of the pastoral sounds of birds chirping and a single acoustic guitar playing quietly as background to your meandering zombies is priceless. Old McDonell and his farmhands are so crazy looking they make the zombies look not half bad. Especially for a free app, the graphic design is really impressive.
The ability to connect with friends through Facebook — much like the popular games Farmville and Mafia Wars – adds a fun dimension to this game. The FREE price tag should encourage you to at least download the app and try it out, but you will need to give it a try for some time before truly being able to appreciate the game. For anyone who is looking for a fast action game, this won’t be your best bet. An improvement in the early stages would be faster growing produce to help encourage newcomers to stick with the game. Earning brain and money should be made easier in the first ten free levels, and then become more challenging after purchasing the full game.
Pros:
  • Great price – FREE!
  • Amusing graphics and sound
  • Social networking connectivity
Cons:
  • Slow moving and hard to advance
  • Needs to be played every day for best results

iPhone Games: Fishing Frenzy Review

Fishing Frenzy for the iPhone should not be confused with Rapala’s Fishing Frenzy, as the two games are completely different, both literally and figuratively. Whereas Rapala’s was a fairly realistic attempt at a fishing simulation, the iPhone’s Fishing Frenzy is a strict arcade style fishing game, and a very limited one at that.

Fishing Frenzy is controlled entirely via the tilting action of the iPhone. You move the phone left and right to move your boat around atop the water, and jerk it up and down to raise and lower your line in the water.
Fishing Frenzy’s biggest problem is that it ignores the most interesting aspect of fishing games (and real life fishing for that matter) by eliminating the battle once the fish is hooked. Instead of intense battles that could’ve been controlled in a number of creative ways, the fish simply flies out of the water the second you hook it, at which point you must manoeuvre the boat around so the fish lands inside the boat.
This gameplay mechanic also has the effect of making the game zip by far too quickly. Without prolonged battles for fish in place, the game instead uses a timer and a points system to determine success, and levels are extremely short, with the early levels clocking in at under a minute to beat. With only twelve levels, you can surely guess that there isn’t much gameplay to be had. The game could easily be beaten in less than half an hour.
The only real variety to the basic gameplay is the inclusion of a few obstacles that you need to avoid, in the form of electric eels and swordfish, and the fact that different fish award varying amounts of points. Other than that you simply move your hook around to the fish and then your boat around to catch them.
The graphics are adequate, but not much more than that. Most of the fish are nice and colourful, but the background and character art is very uninspiring. It doesn’t help that the same background is used throughout the entire game.

The developer has touted the fact that their game is currently free for a limited time, which is hard to imagine given the game’s current state. How they could realistically expect to charge money for it at present is beyond me. Even as a free game I can’t really recommend it to anyone. Sure, some people may enjoy what little gameplay there is, but that could be said for thousands of free games on the iPhone and PC.
Until the gameplay is more diverse and interesting, there’s more variety in backgrounds and levels, and more levels themselves, this game is nothing more than a waste of time, albeit a small amount of time.
Pros:
  • Cute fish
Cons:
  • Ignores the meat of fishing, the battles
  • Far too short
  • No variety
Score: 3/10

iPhone Games: iMafia Review

iMafia is one of the growing entrants in the iPhone MMO genre. In it, your goal is to build up your criminal empire and conquer the vast sea of degradation that is humanity. You can buy up real estate to build up your wealth, beat down the poor saps that try to cross your path, and even knock off your rivals, all in the name of sticking it to the man, and the poor fools that try to cross you.
Now before you get excited about that free price tag dangling down there at the end of the review, you should know that iMafia works much like the multitude of free-to-play MMO’s on the internet. While it is indeed free to play, players who are willing to invest real money to purchase in-game points have a decided advantage over those who don’t. And points are by no means cheap, you could easily spent $20+ on points just trying to build your gangster up to a level where he’s even moderately competitive with the other top players. A steep price tag for what amounts to little more than a text-based game.
iMafia has three different character classes to choose from, the brawler, mogul, and workaholic. Each comes with a unique bonus that will cater to different play styles. Brawlers get faster health regeneration, the workaholic has fast energy regeneration, and the mogul earns income faster. The game comes with some handy tutorials to help get you up to snuff, a feature lacking in many iPhone games.
As mentioned your main goal is to collect income, increase the size of your gang, develop your skills, and keep an eye on your stats to make sure your ready for any forthcoming missions. Unlike the nearly identical iMob, there is less of an emphasis on friend codes to increase your ranking, and more of an emphasis on actually playing the game, which is naturally a step in the right direction.
The game is presented entirely in text, menus, and graphical stills. There’s not much in the way of art, or even much story or dialogue for that matter, making the game far less interesting than other MMO’s. You simply continue to perform your daily routines in a relentless task to build yourself up, with no real driving motivation to do so.
Connection issues are also rampant. Most iPhone MMO’s have had severe troubles in this area, so iMafia is by no means unique in this respect, but even so, waiting as much as 10 seconds for the game to connect and load up a simple text-based menu is not my idea of a good time. The app will also close at times without provocation.
I have a hard time getting excited about games like this, but I’m sure there’s enjoyment to be had for the right people. It’s a decent enough game, though entirely derivative and nearly identical to iMob. It’s free to play, so if it sounds like something up your alley, go ahead and give it a try.
Pros
  • Good tutorials to help newbies get started
Cons
  • Connection issues
  • Plays like any other text-based MMO
  • Art and dialogue is lacking
Score: 5/10

iPhone Games: Lemonade Tycoon Review

When you think of the working world, there’s one element that’s always missing; kids. Yeah, the poor little kiddies still haven’t managed to crack their way into corporate America, or even McDonald’s. So what’s a kid yearning for some extra Hot Wheels spending money to do? Well he could get a paper route (see game: Paperboy), or he could mix up a batch of juice and set up office outside his/her house, selling small cups of often poorly prepared juice for exorbitant amounts of money. Kids have the benefit of being kids after all, which often pulls at the heartstrings of adults, even when they know the juice will be overpriced and lacking in lemonade goodness.

It’s back to these halcyon days of child economics 101 we head with Lemonade Tycoon, a free iPhone game which starts off no more complicated than running a simple stand from your front lawn would be, but soon evolves past the reach of the average child into lemonade empire territory.
The gameplay is broken down into days, and as each day passes you’ll be greeted with the menu screen where you can adjust all facets of your business, right down to the recipe you use to create your lemonade and the underlying profit margin (or deficit, avoid the deficits) it will create when contrasted against the price you’re selling for. Like life, finding that perfect balance is essential, in this case the balance between squashing lemons and mixing them with water and sugar, and the amount of greenbacks you’re going to charge for them.
You can buy upgrades for your lemonade stand, spend money on marketing campaigns to get the word out, hire new staff, and much more. A nice little touch was the daily newsflashes, which always managed to make me smile with their silly lemon infused headlines. You can also see the overall popularity of your stand and check on the weather for the following days, which plays an important role in how many customers will show up.
Like all great simulation and Tycoon games of the past, you never quite reach that point where you feel completely comfortable. Different weather requires adjustments to strategy, such as the recipe you’ll use and where you’ll set up shop. As you get more successful you’ll need to hire more workers to keep up with the demand or risk losing all those previously satisfied customers. Unlike the lemonade itself, where the perfect recipe may in fact exist, there’s never quite that perfect point where the game just runs itself (and which would be quite boring after all). You’re constantly making small tweaks and adjustments on the road to unattainable perfection.
If there’s one weakness in the package, it’s the graphics, which are blocky and utterly devoid of detail. I’m assuming the game is a direct port of one of the previous PC versions, which have been around in one form or another for years, but I have no clue which one. As it is, the graphics will transport you back into the distant past just as the gameplay will. Maybe it’s fitting after all.

While Lemonade Tycoon isn’t quite as demanding as other simulation games, and isn’t much of a looker, there’s a simplicity and charm to the title that makes it undeniably appealing. Oh, and did I mention it’s free? Yes, unlike lemonade, some things in life really are free.
Pros:
  • The price is right
  • Addictive simulation game that lets us return to our youth
Cons:
  • Graphics are quite unimpressive
Score: 9/10
Price: Free

iCopter Classic Review

iphone Games |Iphone Themes | iphone tones | iphone softs | i phone photos | Iphone Mobiles
Black Berry Mobiles | Black Berry Games | Black Berry Themes | Black Berry Tones | Black Berry Softs
ITunes

iCopter Classic is the free iPhone app of the flash game which players either loved or hated. The game is a simple helicopter flying sim, with you controlling your craft through a never-ending cave filled with chunky floors and ceilings and floating Pong paddles, a feature every cave should have
.

The controls are exceptionally simple. Without any input your helicopter will slowly descend, by touching it, it will rise back up. The time needed to make it rise or fall depends on its speed of ascent or descent, which is where the initial difficulty comes in. The faster it’s going in one direction, the longer it will take to stop and begin going in the desired direction. Once you’ve mastered the controls, the only real challenge is to keep your view on what’s coming up so you can plan your course accordingly.
The newest version of iCopter Classic allows options to speed up or slow down the gameplay which is a nice addition, as well as the ability to change between different helicopter styles and colour schemes. The core graphics though remain faithful in every other way to the flash original, which is to say they’re quite ugly. With single colour pixel blobs for walls and ceilings, and a simple gradient colour background, only the half-decent looking chopper (at least compared to everything around it) saves the game from being perhaps the ugliest game ever.
iCopter Classic has no levels or objectives of any kind, you simply fly as long as you can without dying in a flaming crash. The distance you’ve flown is equated into a points score so you can keep track of your greatest flying feat.
The main problem with iCopter Classic is that there’s no variation of play. Everything is exactly the same 5 minutes into the game as it was at the beginning. The caves don’t get tighter, the blocks don’t speed up or change in any way, it’s just the exact same game from start to finish. The levels do get randomized, but the difficulty is the same each time, and throughout the entire level.
iCopter Classic is the type of game that will send you through 3 distinct emotions as you play it. Overwhelming frustration at first, as you try to learn how to control your helicopter and crash into everything 3 seconds into the level, exuberance as you finally learn how to play and begin making progress, and then boredom as you perfect your play and realize the game is both far too easy at that point, and far too repetitive.

One major annoyance encountered was a pop-up constantly asking me to let the game track my playing location. It will continually harass you until you say yes, even while playing the actual game, which is a terribly poor decision, and entirely unnecessary.
As a free game, it’s hard not to give iCopter Classic at least a small recommendation, as it should give gamers some enjoyment until they’ve mastered it. Go in with realistic expectations of what it is and you may find yourself enjoying it, at least for a short while.
Pros:
  • Simple controls and realistic physics
Cons:
  • Too challenging to start with, too easy after some practice
  • Hideous graphics
  • Annoying pop-ups
Price: Free
Score: 4.5/10
