Alibaba Creates Aliyun Mobile OS to Compete with iOS, Android

Chinese e-commerce conglomerate Alibaba plans to roll out a new mobile phone OS, dubbed Aliyun OS, inside a phone and tablet for the Chinese market.

The OS will debut inside a phone and tablet from Beijing Tianyu Communication Equipment Co., specifically the K-Touch Cloud-Smart Phone W700, the company said in a statement.

Alibaba's operating system makes use of "cloud-based" services, including e-mail, Internet search, weather updates and GPS and mapping applications, the company said. The OS will apparently require users to be constantly connected to take advantage of its Web-based apps, instead of designing applications that can run natively on the phone's hardware. But, the company added, there will be some interoperability with the Android OS.

Alibaba claims it is the largest e-commerce company in China, with first-quarter revenue of 1.53 billion yuan ($237.7 million).

"Mobile users want a more open and convenient mobile OS, one that allows them to truly enjoy all that the Internet has to offer right in the palm of their hand, and the cloud OS, with its use of cloud-based applications, will provide that," said Wang Jian, president of Alibaba Cloud Computing, in a statement. "Introducing cloud apps to mobile devices not only brings a whole new user experience, but also greater ease for third-party mobile software developers who will be able to use Internet technology such as HTML5 and JavaScript to reduce the complexity in the app development process."

Alibaba said that each user would be given a free 100 Gbytes of storage to back up data to AliCloud's remote data center, which could be replicated to the PC and mobile devices.

Third-party developers can opt to either develop cloud apps over their own servers or choose to use AliCloud's infrastructure and open platform services at a low cost and quickly develop their businesses, Alibaba said. "The cloud OS is the result of three years of development and uses AliCloud's self-developed distributed file system and virtual machine; the cloud OS is also fully compatible with Android-based applications," the company added.

It's unclear whether developers would latch onto the new OS, cloud-based or not. Although Nokia technically supported Symbian, the company's shift To Windows Phone essentially created a market of two top-tier mobile OSes (Apple's iOS and Google's Android) as well as, possibly, the struggling RIM BlackBerry OS. Other efforts, such as MeeGo and the recent Mozilla Boot to Gecko, would seem to fall into a second tier, where Aliyun OS would begin.

In other Alibaba news, Alibaba Group, Yahoo and SoftBank said they they reached an agreement in which Alibaba Group will continue to participate in Alipay's future financial performance, including a future IPO or other liquidity event. Alipay will pay to Alibaba Group, prior to a liquidity event, a royalty and software technology services fee, which consists of an expense reimbursement and a 49.9 percent share of the consolidated pre-tax income of Alipay and its subsidiaries. Alibaba Group will receive no less than $2 billion and no more than $6 billion in proceeds from an IPO of Alipay or other liquidity event, the companies said.

Yahoo and Alibaba Group have scrambled after it was disclosed in May that Alibaba had unexpectedly spun off one of its more lucrative business units, Alipay, into a separate company. Yahoo, which owns 43 percent of Alibaba, would receive substantial compensation in the case of a public offering.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1: A worthy opponent for iPad 2

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 runs on the latest version of Honeycomb, the Android 3.1, and is slightly thinner than iPad 2. The 3G version of the tablet, will however, come later this year.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 is a keenly awaited tablet, which is set to enter the market within one week in some stores, though officially it will be launched by the company only on June 17. While, the 3G version of the tablet will arrive in the market later this year.
The tab is set to challenge the supposedly indomitable Apple iPad 2, which is being currently sold from thousands of retail stores and about 300 Apple stores across the world.

As the name itself suggests, the tablet has a 10.1 inch capacitive touchscreen besides a 1 GHz dual core processor, storage options (of 16GB, 32GB or 64GB), a 3 megapixel back facing and a 2 megapixel front facing camera and much more. The latest Honeycomb (Android 3.1) operating system powers the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1.

Moreover, the Samsung tablet is said to be thinner than iPad 2 by 0.2 mm. Thus, going by the features, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 does seem a worthy opponent for iPad 2.

However, the Apple tablet has its own share of advantages and despite arrival of several contenders, which came with better specs, it continues to hold on to its market share. Third party support is one of the biggest advantages of Apple, which means there are numerous additional features available for Apple products which are not made by Apple, but are still an inseparable part of the experience. Despite coming from the same family, in terms of additional add ons, Apple does provide choice to the users — a good sticking point.

While talking about choice, it'll be convenient for users if we took the example of chat facility. There are more chat options for Samsung Galaxy Tab users whereas Apple has FaceTime. But the iOS devices offer apps like Skype, whereas the Android apps are mostly designed for smaller screens. The iOS devices also provide access to numerous apps, and the Android apps numbers do not match up.

The iPad 2 also faces threat from Toshiba which is set to launch it tablet, named as Thrive, within a month or two. To create the hype, Toshiba has chosen to poke fun at the iPad 2, though it remains to be seen how this strategy pans out in the real world.

Intel Reveals Two iPad 2 Secrets

Intel engineers have finally cracked the secret of what makes the Apple iPad 2 a successful product, despite the fact that it is not actually have the fastest hardware in the tablet world.

Techradar was shown a single core Intel Atom tablet from 2010 that delivers the same sort of user experience as the iPad 2 with some under-the-hood tweaks that promises to make Intel-based tablets even better.

An Intel Team managed to come up with a recipe that puts responsiveness and smoothness at the top of the agenda rather than raw performance numbers.

Intel has found out that a good user experience requires a display refresh rate of at least 60Hz rather than the universally accepted 30Hz.

Doing so however requires some significant memory bandwidth requirements. This issue is made even more acute by the fact that Microsoft's OS has a pixel depth of 7, which means that each pixel on a screen is rewritten seven times while it drops down to 4 for iOS.

The other trick that they have found is that the iPad has a reaction time of around 15ms while in Windows OSes this normally hovers around 200ms because the OS waits to see whether there's a second click comes.

Intel engineers have managed to trick the OS and getting access to Direct input libraries which in turn dramatically reduces the reaction time.

Crucially, Matt Dunford, World-wide Benchmarking Manager states "there were some things in the OS that were limiting Atom from achieving its potential."

What could it mean? Well Intel will almost certainly implement those changes in Meego, its own operating system to improve user experience. Secondly, it will also actively encourage its partners to adopt these techniques to improved performance on Wintel tablets.

You may find it at Careerbuilder.com, and if you can find it by searching CB, the biggest online job-search site, you can find it using your iPad or iPhone anywhere with a wireless signal. Match your skills with what an employer is looking for--from the Caymans. If the guy in the WebEx meeting is doing the hiring, SCORE! If not, in this economy, you may have to settle for gainful employment in your chosen field.

USPS Mobile, UPS Mobile, FedEx Mobile for iPhone, Various; Free. They do exactly what you think they do. Call for a pickup and track the shipment from your iPhone or iPad with WiFi. If you're on the go, and you want to make sure your package is behaving likewise, one or more of these apps is a must.

Office2 Plus, Byte Squared; Free. Office2 Plus gives you access to docs you take with you, docs residing on mobile-friendly cloud computing services such as Google Docs and MobileMe, and docs e-mailed to you. Through in-app upgrades, which are not free, you can also create and edit Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel files on your iPad or even on your iPhone if you're in a pinch.
These apps are the best of the best -- some trendy, some workmanlike, but all indispensable if you want to start running your business from your iPad or iPhone.

What would you do with the Nokia N8 in 48 hours?

The Cannes Lions festival is a celebration of creativity and flair – and that’s exactly what the Nokia sponsored Young Lions were challenged to do in a 48hr film competition in France this year

.

41 teams fought it out for their chance to win the title, and all of them were given an essential Nokia N8′ kit which included an N8, lens attachment, steady cam and tripod. All they had to do was come up with the great ideas, script, edit and shoot their masterpiece

They were in safe hands though, guided by resident Nseries photography expert, Ari Partinen, who presented his tips and tricks of the trade to give them all the information they needed.

The Nokia N8′s 5 finest moments!

Released in October last year, the Nokia N8 has had its fair share of adventures over the past 10 months or so. So, join us on our trip down memory lane where we recall, in no particular order, our top 5 finest moments with the Nokia N8!

1. N8 Producers

N8 producers was about capturing amazing footage on the Nokia N8 and, hopefully, winning a zero gravity experience in the process. There were some top class entries – seriously, all you have to do is just take a look at the winning videos. Out of this world stuff!

2. Nokia Shorts

Pitch. Shoot. Win. Nokia Shorts wasn’t rocket science, but it was a celebration of film-making genius. It all culminated in the 8 finalists showing off their hard work at the Edinburgh International Film Festival, with JW Griffiths taking top prize for his acclaimed Splitscreen: A Love Story.

3.  Gulp/Dot Animation

The world’s smallest stop motion animation, followed by the world’s largest stop motion animation. Both filmed on the Nokia N8. The latter of which is almost done and ready to share!

4. Direct & Project

Taking place at the Vancouver Art Gallery, some rather talented film-makers were given the chance to express their creativity by directing and projecting their very own 60 second Nokia N8 films.

10 Future Mobile Trends

It’s 2030 and over the past 20 or so years, your mobile phone (if that’s what we still call it) has replaced your wallet, keys and computer, becoming the single most important piece of gadgetry you own.

Scary or exciting? Well, convergence is all around us and has been for a number of years, but what will the next couple of decades hold for the mobile industry.  Let’s take a look…

1. Cloud

There’s been a lot of buzz about cloud computing over the years. For those of you who aren’t familiar, it offers a secure place for applications and data to be accessed from any network device, whether it’s a phone, laptop or PC. Given the situation, that means you’ll be able to access your important work documents while out of the office and in front of almost any device.

2. Flexible Screens

The ability to bend and flex your phone is a very exciting prospect – see the Nokia Morph and the Nokia 888 concept phones.

3. Projectors

It has been suggested that the integration of projectors on mobile phones may well coincide with the downtrend of laptops. How does this work? Well, with mobile phones approaching laptop-esque processing power, all that’s missing from your smartphone is a larger screen to view it on. Enter the projector…

4. 4G & 5G

We are about to see a rafter of 4G phones hit the market offering faster and more stable connections which supersede that of 3G. We may be getting ahead of ourselves a bit here but it’s predicted that by 2020 we’ll be seeing 5G!

5. NFC

Near field communication. There are some seriously cool uses of NFC for social networking. Imagine just tapping your phone on another mobile to make a mobile payment, or to share a file or business card!

6. The death of the Digital Camera & SLR’s

The experience of taking a photo on your mobile phone has changed dramatically. You just have to look at our evolution of the camera phone post to see how far we’ve come. The question is, in the ten years time, will there be the need for a low/mid-range digital camera when your phone can do just as good a job?

Then there’s the Digital SLR, a contentious point perhaps but with some of the fantastic new camera accessories available (just check our Nokia N8 macro post) will future high-power lenses be just as good on a mobile phone camera, as they are on the real thing?

7. Wireless technology

It’s not just us who can’t wait for the day when wireless technology supersedes that of the tangled wired charger. We’re definitely counting down the hours. The technology is there in the form of charging mats, but it’s not quite mass market yet.

8. Sensory focus

You touch a device, you hear the caller and you see the display – but what about smell and taste? It may sound odd but mobile technology doesn’t think so. Take the Nokia Morph concept again, which can detect specific chemical compounds in the air to tell you if something is safe to consume.

9. Location, location, location

The likes of foursquare have meant that it’s easier to see where people are at any given time (on the basis they check-in) and software like that of Nokia Find & Connect, which we featured a couple of months ago, are certainly progressing the market.

10. Green

One trends for certain, the future of mobile phones is most definitely green. Nokia are a good example of leading the way in environmentally friendly practices with 100% of packaging being fully recyclable and 26 of the top 30 green phones being Nokia!

Nokia N8: Street Photography with Ari Partinen

Street photography has really struck the imaging nation over the past couple of years – and I’m glad it has. Global imaging could really benefit from a few days of street photography.  To prove my point I start my blog with this image from the beautiful Cannes in southern France. Absolutely amazing place, gorgeous weather – and one of the most boring pictures on the planet (naturally I’m exaggerating slightly but still, it´s a pretty boring picture).



The reason why I consider the image boring is that there are no people in the picture. Not even any animals in the frame, for that matter. To me it really is all the things living that make the picture. Another point is my picture isn’t unique. I actually checked this and you can go to Google image search, type in “Cannes” and you will get roughly 15 million images from Cannes and they all look better than mine. There´s really nothing in my image that sets it apart from all the other photos captured in that city – and why is that? My picture is missing people, it´s missing the life in Cannes, and because of that – it´s missing the story.

Good street photograph tells a story and it´s always one of a kind. One of my favorite shots I have taken during my travels is the picture with this young Chinese kid jumping in an alley in city of Guangzhou, China (below). It´s not technically perfect by any means, it´s not a particularly beautiful picture but it does tell a story, it tells something about life of the people in Guangzhou, and it tends to get me in a good mood when I look at the picture – and it´s definitely one of a kind as well. I checked this and you can try typing “smiling kid jumping on alley in Guangzhou” to Google. You still get 50900 hits, but none of them are anything like my picture.

So how can one get started with street photography then? After all, we are talking about photographing strangers in the street, and in Finland especially, it´s already difficult to say “hi” to strangers, let alone take a picture and smile to them.

In street photography I think the hardest part is to learn how to confront strangers on the streets. But as all things in life, street photography gets easier over time and you can practice it. Try this one super easy exercise. Next time you are taking a subway or train make eye contact with the person in front of you. When he/she looks back to you, fight your normal instincts and don´t look away, but instead give him/her a smile. I bet there´s a huge change and they will return the smile .

Smiling is a great asset when you are out there with your camera (or in my case with your Nokia N8) taking pictures of strangers. If you are polite, considerate and remember to smile I guarantee, most of the people don´t mind you taking their picture. Who knows, you might even capture few smiles.

So, my top tips for street photography:

• Aim to tell a story with each of your shots
• Remember to be polite and smile
• Respect people’s privacy
• Street photography tends to be easier with mobile phones than big SLR’s as nobody takes a fellow taking pictures with a mobile phone too seriously
